Adler Planetarium - Week 2

Hi!!

I can’t believe we’ve already finished another week at our internship sites. This week has been a self-affirming week. What can I say, interning at a place like this is extremely humbling, but I initially felt incompetent because I hardly knew anything about the Adler. Every day that passes by teaches me that the Adler is not just a place for science, but also a place for history and art! It’s really a place for anyone and I can say I learn something new every day. I am loving this place!

Monday, was yet another “YAP Washington Week” kind of day. I talk very fondly of these Mondays because they really remind me of Washington Week. It was very empowering and even the littlest of details have stuck with me. On Monday we had a panel of speakers come in. Four engineers came in to talk to us about their experiences as African-American engineers. This reminded me a lot about a topic we talked about during Washington Week. Representation matters. In addition to this, the other teen interns and I continued to talk about the Community Bash that we’ll be hosting in August. The Community Bash is an opportunity to share, with family and friends, our experiences as teen interns at the Adler. We will be hosting the event which’ll incorporate activities (games), food, videos to highlight that experience, and more!

With that being said, a lot of what I’ve been doing since the start of my internship has revolved around representation. My supervisors have given me the opportunity to make a project my own and based on something that I would like to focus on. Remember that last week I was researching women of color’s contributions to history, the Adler, or the Apollo missions? The project and goal have shifted a little bit ever since. Are you ready to hear about this?? *Drum roll* ..... I will be having a phone interview with Ellen Ochoa this upcoming Monday!! I am extremely humbled and EXCITED (I still can’t believe that I will get a chance to interview her). On Tuesday I continued to do research on her, in order for me to compile a good list of questions. The list of questions I’ve compiled are relevant to a lot of topics we discussed during Washington Week (regarding representation). I am ecstatic and cannot wait to tell you more about this next Monday!

In addition to this project, I will be working on another project for the Adler’s blog. One of the teen interns in the Marketing Department and I will be compiling a list of questions for a Q & A on imposter syndrome, and what that means to incoming college freshmen. We will also include our take on representation and why that is essential in museums. On Friday was the beginning of the Moon Bash, or the Adler’s take on the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing! The Moon Bash consists of many activities throughout the day, and one of them is the “Collections Corner.” The Collections Department was to bring out important items relevant to the Apollo 11 Mission, and present them to guests. I had the opportunity to participate and help my supervisors with the short and informal presentations. I had the opportunity to answer some of the questions guests had.

After this second week, the Adler Planetarium is starting to feel like home. It’s a really cool place that has prompted me to consider a STEM degree (the possibilities are endless)!  This past week has made me explore my Latinidad on a deeper level. It has made me reflect on the importance of representation and on YAP’s mission. And with that I can say that I am extremely grateful to be a part of such an amazing program that cultivates the next generation of leaders.

Les deseo lo mejor,
