Adler Planetarium - Week 3
Hola!
It’s been great getting to read all of your blogs. So far this internship has helped me get outside of my comfort zone and that’s a really good thing! I’ve definitely gotten much more comfortable with driving on the highway. Even though driving in Chicago can be a little hectic, it’s been an adventure. This past week was by far one of the most memorable weeks of my life. As I mentioned in my last blog, I was to interview Ellen Ochoa this past week. Let me just say it was remarkable!
On Mondays, we have career exploration days. This past Monday we switched things up from our traditional Mondays and stayed inside the Adler as opposed to the Doane Observatory. Another group of teenagers who are in a summer program outside of the Adler’s joined us. We had an opportunity to get to know the group that joined us and talk to four guest speakers. Shortly after this, I interviewed Ellen Ochoa! We had set up the interview for 1:30 PM and let me just tell you, I was SO nervous. Everything turned out much better than I expected though! I am so grateful for this experience, and was left inspired by Ellen Ochoa’s wisdom. As a first-generation college student, this meant a lot to me. I will be writing up something on the Adler’s blog about this interview, so if you guys want to check that out, just let me know! After the interview the other Adler interns and I continued to work on our pitch for the Community Bash. We presented a proposal (kind of like YAP week) and received feedback on things that would be feasible for the day of the event.

The rest of the week consisted of me transcribing the interview and brainstorming ideas for the Adler’s blog. The interview was about twenty-six minutes long, but took me four hours to transcribe over the course of two days. Four hours of listening to my voice was super weird and uncomfortable but I’ve never been more okay with the sound of my voice on a recording than now! In addition to this, the Marketing intern and I finalized our project. She wanted to interview me so that I could be featured in the Adler’s blog. She and I finished transcribing the interview and will soon have this Q&A ready. On Thursday I joined the Space Visualization Lab interns for the weekly public speaking workshops. I recently started going to these hour long workshops to help with my public speaking and storytelling. I really enjoyed this because it gave me a new perspective on storytelling and different ways of going by that. Also, it’s super cool in there!!

I concluded my week with our community outreach day: Storytime with a Young Ambassador! I was so happy to see Elisa, hear about everything she’s been doing at her internship site, and all of her cta (Chicago Transit Authority) adventures. I’m so glad she’s familiar with our transportation system now. We were joined by two siblings and their parents. Yesenia, Natalie, and her siblings joined us as well. Friday was a really refreshing day because I was reminded of the little things in life. The children there were amazed with the instruments at the library and all of the sounds produced by the wooden sticks. My creativity shined through, and I felt like a kid again. I was reminded of the beauty in bilingualism and learned new ways of encouraging literacy in young children. I was also left inspired by a lot of the children's ideas, imagination, and aspirations! Also, I learned that Elisa is a really good story-teller and has a talent for it!
Until next time,
Brenda
