Arte Américas - Week 3

Hi, y'all!

This week was a short, but necessary break between the past Hecho en Fresno Plaza Night and upcoming Cumbiatron! event this Friday. Besides learning how to recharge and refocus after a big event, I learned more about how Arte Américas and other cultural centers keep a record of their materials and expenditures in order to best continue offering their amazing services to the community.

This week also marks the halfway mark for my internship, and it is already such a transformative experience. More than knowing how to open and close for the public, I'm proud to have been given opportunities to serve in a capacity similar to the center's most experienced volunteers and paid staff. I am especially proud to have been given the opportunity to create a flyer for our past screening of Adios Amor, the story of Maria Moreno, a worker's rights activist before the UFW, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
The flyer I created for our screening of Adios Amor.

This week was also my last with my primary supervisor, Arte Operations Manager Silvina Hernández, before her family visit to Oaxaca. Over the last three weeks, I was able to feel as confident in my abilities and appreciated for the work I have done so far thanks to her guidance and care. Although I know it will be difficult with her gone, I am grateful that she has taught me more about my abilities, and about self-care, while I was under her leadership. I am reminded of the power of mentorship our cohort discussed frequently throughout Washington Week, because although I have only known her for the three weeks of this internship, her commitment to understanding my strengths and advising me throughout this time has helped me to feel at home in this center and in the world of cultural centers in general.

I made it, y'all!

Gratefully,

Maya Castillo
