Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose - Week 2
Hello, everyone! I am back again, to share my experience interning at the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose.
My second week at the museum was GREAT! I spent my week in a program called SOS (Summer of Service). This is a program for teens that combines service learning all summer long. The participants are divided into five teams, each of these team engage in community service through different ways. My first day at the program was basically just getting to know all the participants.
The second day, I was part of the striped team which focuses in leadership. I got to go to Sacred Heart, a non profit organization that serves the community and offers a variety of resources such as educational program, job opportunities, free food, and free clothes. We got to work on the clothes closet, sorting clothes and helping organize the store like space where members can choose their clothing items. Even though this was not a new experience for me, as I used to be a volunteer lead at that same organization, it was good to come back and help an organization that does so much for the community. In addition, I enjoyed being there with the striped team because because I felt like they felt more motivated to engage in the tasks once they saw someone from their team (me) being determined in helping and completing as many tasks as possible.
The third day, I was part of the green team, which is focused on serving the community through a more "Greener" way. We went to a place called Veggielution, in this place we helped to clean out all the weeds that were blocking the fruit trees. The weeds were about 4-5 feet tall, and that is not an overstatement. We were not expected to be able to get rid of all the weeds and leave everything perfect; however, we were able to completely clean all the space, and part of that was because everyone worked as a team and we were all having fun. I really enjoyed going to this service location because it was a new experience and I liked the fact that we all helped each other whenever it was needed. Plus we also got to harvest fruits and take them home with us at the end of the service!
On day four, I joined the striped team once again. This time we went to a place called RAFT, a place where teacher can get supplies for their classroom at a very affordable price. We started by sorting out a variety of writing utensils: pencils, pens, highlighters, markers, etc. We were able to finish all the boxes we were assigned to go through. Once again, I could see everyone working as a team to finish the tasks we were given as soon as possible but also in the right way. We had almost like a small assembly line in which each one of us would perform a task to accomplish a mutual goal.
My fifth and last day, I got to go on a scavenger hunt around the city of San Jose. We went to ten different point of interest throughout the city, I had a lot of fun as we had to figure out riddles to know where we were going next. It was cool to see the kids using their brains to figure out the riddles and helping each other out. To close the day, we all went bowling and we got to enjoy have fun after a week of serving our communities.
I really liked this week just because of the fact that we were serving our community. Even though I had worked with children and youth before, I had never worked with high schoolers. This helped me broaden my experience working with children and youth, so it was a meaningful experience to go through.
