Claudia León - Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte Week 3

RICKY RENUNCIÓ!
It happened on Thursday but the entire week was slow while we waited for him to do so. The University of Puerto Rico (where the museum I’m interning is at) is a state-owned institution, and one that is notorious for taking extreme political stances and constantly being on strike. This week, while the university didn’t entirely cease to function, they did give all employees a week of “vacation.” This meant that the museum was closed, and the only people who went the entire week were me, my supervisor, and the museum director.
Monday, there was a national strike. I don’t think anyone was at the museum that day. Most, if not everyone, was out on the streets protesting. It was such an amazing and surreal feeling to be here during such a huge, historic, peaceful protest. It was the largest in the island’s history and an inspiring sight to see.
Tuesday, Thursday*, and Friday the museum remained closed so I assisted my supervisor with anything she might have needed as well as worked on the captions for some YouTube videos on the museum’s channel. This is all to further the museum’s desire to make knowledge accessible and inclusive for everyone. The work is frustrating, tedious, and very easy to mess up (as I learned many, many times) but it is worth it in order to make educational content more accessible to deaf/HoH communities.
Wednesday*, while the museum didn’t open as usual we opened up the Oller gallery to the creative writing workshop students so that they wouldn’t miss a week. Business went on relatively as usual
All in all, this was a relatively uneventful week (aside from the governor resigning, a historic first for the island). I’m excited for my last week as well as to be able to go back home and sleep in my own bed after a long month.
*Ricky resigned in a Facebook Live between the hours of 11:50pm on Wednesday and 12:05 am on Thursday. My mom and I might have cried from our beds, but our spirits were in San Juan with protesters celebrating.
Love and miss you all,
Clau
