Gardens at the San Antonio Museum of Art - Maya Diaz
July 22-26
Coming back from my week-long retreat, there were not many events that the education department was coordinating this week. Instead, another intern and I began planning for the next couple of Family Day activities, with the theme of Egyptian Adventure. From researching the symbols of Amulets to trying to come up with an original art activity for children to participate in. Even though these activities will take place in October, my supervisor always pushes getting things done and ready early. At times it seems as if no activities are going on in our department, yet we’re always planning for something new, teaching me that you can never be too prepared for an event.
While walking through the area, I remembered Washington week, when we visited the Smithsonian Gardens. Then, a lightbulb went off. The area I was walking through would be the perfect location for not only a community garden but also a sculpture garden. The community garden would bring life into the area, while the sculptures would tie it all together with interactive pieces of art (being an art museum). With the creation of the garden, so many activities would be available for not only youth but the elderly and the rest of the community as well. Some activities include a teen workshop to create a miniature sculpture garden from recycled trash and concrete. Other activities might include teaching children about agriculture and how to lead a sustainable lifestyle. Bringing the idea to my supervisor, she thought it would be a great idea to use this topic for a presentation that every intern must perform.
Todo lo Mejor,
Maya Diaz
