Giovanna Ferreira- WEEK 1 at S.C.C.
First-week of internship has been amazing and it is just the beginning of this experience. I was assigned to the Smithsonian Conservation Commons, the castle, and my duty is to develop, create and translate to Spanish SI social media content for the Earth Optimism Summit— a global initiative to showcase the positive stories of improvements in the health of species and ecosystems, along with benefits to human well-being— that will take place on April of 2020.
During my very first day, my supervisor introduced me to the other members of the office. Each person has its own intern and their duties are different from mine since they are either in their first or second year of college. We had 3 meetings with 3 different units to talk about the summit logistics, create some strategies to bring other Smithsonian institutions into this project and touch base on what each office has been working on.

On Tuesday, while I was watching videos of speakers that came to tell their stories in previous years, a visitor came to our office. It was my supervisor’s friend/colleague who was doing a two-day workshop on data research. The program was called Data Carpentry—the one which develops and teaches workshops on the fundamental data skills needed to conduct research using Python3, Panda, Jupiter into other sources that can be used as tools—and its target audience is researchers who have little to no prior computational experience.
My supervisor asked if I wanted to attend this workshop since I did not have a real assignment at the time and of course, I agreed to do it.
On Wednesday, I assisted to the program from 9:00am to 5:00pm and we learned about computer language, basic skills for using Excel and applying what we have learned doing data research.
On Thursday I got to work on a group project with the other interns in my office. We edited and uploaded blogs to the Earth Optimism website. For this second week of internship, we are planning to start translating them into Spanish and French articles to expand our audience.
What I like so far is that my supervisor is making sure that during these 4 weeks of internship I take full Smithsonian experience and not just work at the office. For this week we already have some meetings and events planned to assist.
I cannot wait to tell you all more about this experience.
Hasta la próxima semana,
Giovanna F.
