Talento Bilingue de Houston: Week 1

When I arrive at the Talento Bilingue de Houston, at a prompt 8:30 a.m., there are already children there ready to start the day. This week, I've been staffing the TBH summer camp, which focuses on the arts. Every day, the group of about 20 kids receives classes on some combination of theatre, baile folklorico, art, and mariachi music. When all goes as planned I'm a mere supervisor, ensuring that the kids stay safe during lunch and downtime or helping out the younger kids with the crafts and activities.

However, sometimes extraordinary circumstances happen, and it is these times that I find myself relying on the lessons learned during Washington Week. For example, this week an art class got rescheduled at the last minute. Unfortunately that meant that the 22 kids who had shown up that day had nothing to do for a short period of time. It was the interactive lessons that we had in Washington, testing out new museum exhibits that gave me ideas for crafts and games to play with the kids.

My week at the TBH has helped me see behind the scenes of cultural centers and the chaotic nature of creating a safe space for LatinX people, and I can't wait to see what the new week brings!
