Week Dos at MOLAA
Week 2 of my internship at MOLAA proved to be a little more tame than my first week but Friday was a whirlwind of stress. When I came in on Friday everything seemed pretty routine. I knew we had the Summer art camp open house later that day but because that last one (we have it every Friday) went so well I didn't pay it any attention. The event starts at 3 so at 2:30 I go down to make sure everything is ready and although I was supposed to check that the laptop/projector was working I got caught up helping another intern setting up. At about 2:55 I realize there is no laptop to project the presentation and that the projector was not, in fact, set up. Naturally I freak out and inform my supervisor (who was equally as stressed) and long story short we fixed the issue but only until we were already ten-ish minutes late in starting. Thankfully however all the parents were super understanding and the kids didn’t even notice. I was emceeing the event so I was super nervous when I started but I quickly realized that no one cared about my emceeing skills and that people just wanted to see their kids and the work they had done at camp. In an odd way my last second mishap made me view the event in a different light and ultimately made me appreciate the event so much more because it highlighted how the event was all about the kids, everybody else was just playing a supporting role.
On a different note my activities project has advanced significantly, ideas that were just brainstorms are now turning into full fledged projects. My personal favorite is my timeline project which aims to contextualize an artists works within a larger historical setting, highlighting how events influence the artist’s works. It involves a lot of research which means I’m constantly diving deep into various periods of US history - a great way to spend a couple of hours in my opinion. It feels really fulfilling knowing that my ideas are now coming to fruition but I still have a lot of work left to do.
