Week 3: History Colorado Center

If there's one thing I learned from the past week is that teachers have got it hard, like really hard. It's incredibly difficult to try and plan a whole school year, even if those plans are rather loose and not set in stone.

I had to plan 26 weeks total, 22 if you don't count the beginning and end of each semester
Modeled after the "What's Your Spark?" exhibit, HCC is planning an after school program for three Denver city schools (they hope to expand the program in the future).

Last week, I was tasked to create an outline for both the students and the facilitators. Although the outlines are just suggestion or at least, there to give a vague idea of what the program will be doing, I still had to make sure that it was detailed, easy to understand and follow while also giving plenty of space for the facilitators to make their own program and decide what they and the students want to do.

Each week follows a "knowledge" that are essentially themes covered by the facilitators in order to teach the students not only about themselves, but the people around them. The activities of the week had to align to the knowledges, but of course I could only repeat certain things so many time. Thankfully, my fellow YAPpers were able to help me come up with some ideas (after a lot of whining on my part).

To be honest, I didn't have a very "exciting" week at HCC. But that doesn't mean my week wasn't rewarding. Despite it being tough work (seriously, my brain was dead and out of ideas at the end of the outline), I liked planning a program like this because I knew how important it would be. Plus, it's a pretty cool program that offers some fun activities every day (not to flex my own ideas or anything).

Also, thanks to my supervisor, April, for getting me a burrito on intern appreciation day. This intern really appreciated it.
