Week One at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

Dear YAP Familia,

Oh my goodness, how much am I missing you guys! I have most definitely been making everyone around me dizzy with how much I talk about the program, you guys, and Washington Week. Aside from that, I started my internship at the Frost last week in which I had so much fun.

In the beginning, my job was mostly to help my fellow co-workers and teachers with the campers we currently have by helping answer questions in the lessons we give during the day, help them with the experiments, and making sure they follow instructions which is probably the hardest part.

As the week progressed, my job started shifting from helping with the campers to making their lesson plans for each day, to assisting in the section of exhibits. Talking about exhibits, last Saturday 20, I assisted in the Frost with their event of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing in which they brought a whole portable planetarium! The guests were so intrigued with how could such thing exist! seeing the wonder and the excitement in the children's faces really made my day. Aside from the portable planetarium, we had a send Your Name to Mars booth. The idea behind this is that NASA is going to have a mission on the year 2020 in which they are going to insert the names registered in a chip that they will, once in Mars, insert in the rover and will leave there. Once the people have registered their names, they would be sent a boarding pass "to mars" to their email. Even though most people came to the booth thinking I was guest relations, a lot of people happily registered and were excited to see their boarding passes. This really gave me the opportunity to share my knowledge about Mars and our Solar System in general.

At the end of the week, I found myself in a trusting position in my supervisor, co-worker, and campers' eyes, in such a small amount of time which is extremely heart-warming. I am most definitely looking forward to keep learning in this wonderful time that is left at the Frost Museum. Anyhow, I will keep you updated on how these weeks go. Hasta la vista, baby.

Week 4: History Colorado Center

The last week of my internship was also one of the bests (and I apologize for the lack of pictures again, I'm honestly really bad at remembering to take them). As the last four weeks came to a close, I spent my time putting the finishing touches to any work I was doing. SAMA - the last week

July 29 - August 5th On Tuesday, I was also able to take a mental break from computers and art and had a refreshing storytime at the San Antonio Public Library - Las Palmas branch. Even though our participation level was low (two kids and a grandmother), I still had an incredibly fun time with them. After Criztian and I read the story and did the drumming activity, the kids wanted to show us the songs and dances they learned from the librarian, including If you’re happy and you know it, Frogs on a Log, and Shake the Sillies Out. Seeing how well the children interacted with music and dancing was such a great experience, which fit perfectly with the theme of Tito Puente and his music during storytime. Giovanna Ferreira - WEEK 3 at S.C.C.

Third week of interning at Smithsonian Institution Building has been an adventure. Since we had meetings every single day at every single hour plus doing translations and working on the website for about two weeks, my supervisor decided to give me a little break and sent me to different Smithsonian museums (and the zoo). National Museum of African American History and Culture Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Smithsonian National Museum of American History One of my favorites was the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s annex at Washington Dulles International Airport, VA. The location is, in my opinion, the coolest, because while you are going around exhibitions you can also observe real planes flying over the museum.  Lockheed SR-71A “Blackbird” was by far my favorite of the whole center.
