ASU Art Museum - Week 3
Hey y'all,
The third week of this internship was definitely very exciting and was by far my favorite. Our museum has been working on a shared community education space/workshop area that will be open to the public as of September. This includes brand new furniture being brought in, small decor details like the bookshelf I had to organize by color, and two murals commissioned by San Antonio-based artist Cruz Ortiz.
One of my tasks for the week was to research Mr. Ortiz and look into the background motivation and theme that his art takes on. I thoroughly enjoyed doing so mostly because, much to my surprise, his art is extremely political and is so in a manner that expresses the thoughts of the Latinx community in the form of art. He's done campaign art for the Obama campaign back in 2008, Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016, and is currently working for former San Antonio Mayor/current Democratic Presidental Candidate Julian Castro.
It was surreal to be near someone who is so extremely respected by not only members of the Latinx community but by prominent political figures as well. During a video my supervisor and I planned out, "60 Seconds w/ Cruz Ortiz", we got to really see what his thought process was like as he answered different questions. This reminded me greatly of Washington Week as we met with artists like Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez who used his own talent as an outlet through which to express opinions on the political climate. Cruz Ortiz spent a few weeks here in Arizona prior to creating the mural in order to absorb the climate that we live in. One of the things he picked up on was the news regarding the man who was facing criminal charges over leaving water for undocumented immigrants crossing the border, which inspired him to place that jug of water in the middle of his desert scene in the mural.

Overall, this week has been very dynamic and fun. This internship has provided me with a surprising amount of new experiences and opportunities to meet new people.
