Claudia León - Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte Week 4

Familia:

Last week was bittersweet. While I’m incredibly happy to be back home, in my bed (from where I’m currently writing this), it always stings a little to leave the island.

This week was a fun one, work wise. I got to shadow employees in the administration and registry departments, something I had yet to do. With the administration employee, Gelenia, I got to understand more about the behind-the-scenes of museum activity. She taught me about the employee time sheets, different financial forms that have to be filled out, and how to compose the monthly reports. Monday, Tuesday, and part of Friday were spent working in this area.

Wednesday, as per the previous three, I staffed the creative writing workshop for seniors. This was, of course, my last, but the workshop will run for another month. I once again got to observe these people’s passion for writing and how that translates into the class. They all loved working and learning, as well as sharing their pieces with the class for input. One woman even slipped me a note, as pictured, asking if the workshop would be offered again. While small and seemingly insignificant, the moment touched me and showed me the value that this work was having on the community.
Aforementioned note reading: Will this workshop be offered again? Is there a waiting list?

On Thursday I worked in registry, registering art pieces that were part of a large donation of works by Francisco Vázquez Díaz, otherwise known as Compostela. He was a Spanish artist that was exiled to Puerto Rico in the 1940s and did mainly sculptures and drawings. The work was mechanical and borderline repetitive, with me having to inspect the folders of drawings to make sure they were all there, and writing down all of the correct information. However, I found this easy and entertaining, and happily did it all day.

At the end of the day on Friday, my supervisor gathered everyone in the office and presented me with a certificate. It was a special and touching moment, and an amazing send-off for a wonderful four weeks. I am eternally grateful for el Museo, YAP, the SLC, and Ford for granting me such a great opportunity to learn and immerse myself in my culture for the month. It is definitely an unforgettable experience, and one that I will carry with me.
