MOLAA Week 3 - SELA Art Festival
Week 3 of my internship at MOLAA proved be the most exhausting week. Last week marked the ending of our Summer Art Camp and somehow week 3, despite it being our third time running the camp, turned out to be the most demanding week. Monday was fairly standard and I helped run our morning check-in for the first time which was a welcomed change, much of Tuesday however spent preparing for the kid's final field trip. The field trip was supposed to be low maintenance as it was just a walking art tour around local Long Beach, but walking with group of 30+ (the majority of which were kids ages 6-12) in the summer heat of Southern California was no easy task. Highlights, or perhaps lowlights, include chasing a runaway child, stopping for water at every stop because the kids didn't bring water-bottles, and walking around Southern California heat with 25+ young children who didn't bring water-bottles. As soon as the trip got back to MOLAA I returned to my project for a short period before I had to run downstairs and help prep for another evening activity which of course did not go according to plan either.
The rest of the week followed a similar pattern and by the time Friday came I was incredibly relived. My work for the week was not yet done as I had also volunteered to work at the SELA Arts Festival on Saturday (you can find out more about SELA here: https://speaker.asmdc.org/sela). I won't lie I had no idea what SELA was until I showed up at the L.A. River and I was very surprised and eager to be working at the event. Luckily our booth was right next to the concert stage so I spent the day talking about MOLAA and listening to amazing local artist perform live. The second half of my day was spent helping out at the printmaking station (for the first half I worked the information booth) and I can honestly say that seeing so many families and individuals make art in real time was one of the most incredibly things I've experienced. Everyone was so appreciative of our work and so many people made amazing prints that I flirted with the idea of taking home a couple of the prints people made.
While tiring, week 3 also proved to be the most rewarding and enjoyable week. I'm thankful to have been able to work at SELA and to have met so many amazing local artists. I bought a couple of things from local artists after I was done working :).
